Blindness caused by cataracts in India is more common than many other countries because of a lack of medical access. This has dire impact on people’s lives – it’s harder to live in India as a blind person than other places.
Cataracts happen when the lens in someone’s eye gets cloudy. They predominantly affect older people, as proteins in the lens break down. The best part is that they are curable, since an artificial lens can replace the original lens. This procedure is incredibly safe, easy, and cheap.
Sankara Eye Foundation is an organization dedicated to raising the money and providing free cataract eye surgery. Each surgery is only $30, but life-changing for the people who receive them. With 27 hospitals in 14 states, SEF is working towards Vision 2030: a goal to perform 1 million free surgeries annually by 2030.
